Zinc8 Energy Solutions is a Canadian-based company that specializes in the development and deployment of long-duration energy storage systems using zinc-air battery technology. The company was founded in 2012 as MGX Renewables Inc. and later in 2020, it rebranded as Zinc8 Energy Solutions to reflect its focus on zinc-air energy storage.

The history of Zinc8 Energy Solutions can be traced back to the development of the zinc-air battery technology by researchers at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. The technology was initially aimed at (and still is) addressing the need for cost-effective and scalable energy storage solutions that integrated and addressed the intermittent issue for renewable energy (creating and storage of energy).

Zinc8 Energy Solutions continues to scale up its technology and is working on commercializing its energy storage systems. The company aimed to provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for various applications, including renewable energy storage, grid stabilization, and remote power supply.  

In 2020, Zinc8 Energy Solutions went public through a reverse takeover of MGX Renewables Inc., a publicly traded company on the Canadian Securities Exchange. This strategic move provided Zinc8 Energy Solutions with access to capital and increased visibility in the market. It severed relations with MGX Renewables and moved forward with their new (and current) CEO, Ron MacDonald.  

Zinc8 has been actively involved in deploying its energy storage systems and partnering with various organizations in New York State to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of its technology. The company has focused on pilot projects and collaborations to showcase the versatility and scalability of its zinc-air battery systems.

A) The eight element on the periodic table is Oxygen. We use Zinc and Oxygen to create electricity. 
B) Our electrolyte is called Zincate, which sounds similar to “Zinc 8”.  
C) We originally thought that our long duration energy storage should work at 8 hours or longer…hence, Zinc8!  
D) If you turn the number 8 onto its side, it becomes the infinity symbol!

The  Company  has  one  wholly‐owned  subsidiary,  Zinc8  Energy  Solutions  (USA)  Inc.,  a  company incorporated under the laws of the State of New York on May 6, 2020. Its head office is located at 370 Jay Street, 7th  floor, Brooklyn, New York 11201 and its  registered office is located at  800 –  885 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 3H1. 

Long duration energy storage delivers power/electricity for more than 10 hours. Lithium-ion batteries can deliver electricity continuously for 4 hours, after 4 hours, you will need to add more batteries, making it more expensive as well as needing more batteries to continuously provide electricity. The average power outage in the US, is greater than 4 hours.
